The Wrens of Curragh were a community who lived on the plains of Kildare. The women were called "wrens" because they slept in hollows in the ground which were half in banks or ditches, covered in Gorse bushes, like the nests that birds in the wren family make.
This print is highlighting and remembering these women, who were not looked after, who lived in the outskirts of Curragh To avoid the Workhouses/mother and baby homes.
There are stories of priests attacking women from the Curragh who ventured into town and cutting their hair off to identify to all who they were, men from the nearby town thinking it “sport” to burn down their nests and destroy their possessions.
They were mothers trying to survive A post famine ireland. Their story must be told so that they are not forgotten.
Due to the nature of the printing process there may be small variations from print to print. This is very much one reason why hand printed linocuts are special. Each is unique
All prints are signed .
